December 2007

State of the Bunion 2007

State of the BunionAccording to the NHS, a bunion's described as a bony swelling at the base joint of the big toe. It causes the big toe to be angled inwards, towards the second toe. The skin and tissue on the bump of the bunion can become inflamed, swollen, and painful.

Well you know, in a funny way, I like to think of my Top Ten Glasgow Guide as somewhat of a big swelling at the base joint of my increasingly busy life.

Now don't take that the wrong way - I absolutely love my wee guide to Glasgow. During 2007 my site's become significantly inflamed and swollen with a great deal more information than it had this time last year. It now reaches across the world to thousands of visitors every month, and has almost doubled in size since 2006.

It's like a bubbling bunion though, because of the pain I suffer from, the aching inability in finding the time to infuse it to bursting point every day with even more gleaming pus about life in Glasgow.

Boy how my mind works when I get distracted...

...And therefore, as I sign off for another year, having reflected on my distinct lack of focus thus far, I've decided that from now on, to keep me on the right track I'll be dedicating some space each December to my State of the Bunion Address. How big and bulbous the site's got over the past year. What symptoms have been diagnosed and how I'll treat it next year. Kind of like a medical history really, only without the pure big wurds an that.

2007's been a great year in Camp Docherty, with my wee niece Suzannah being born and the family all doing well, superb holidays in Vegas and NYC, not forgetting trips to Lochearnhead, Arran, St. Andrews, London and the eternally peaceful Lake District, I turned 29 and a year, and of course, Celtic won the double and progressed for an historic 2nd time in a row into the last 16 of the Champions League.

As for Glasgow, we won the race for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, as well as awards like the Curry Capital of Britain and the European Capital of Music. The City has just exploded onto the world's consciousness in the last year, and its regeneration continues to gather momentum at a pace akin to an electrified haggis.

I can only hope that my site doesn't run out of breath and keeps pace with it all. In 2008 I plan to finally complete my Restaurants, Attractions and Getting Around Glasgow sections (didn't you plan that last year Docherty?), and encourage more of you to upload your best photos of your time in the City, in the hope of giving a more completed journey through everything you need to know about Glasgow. Or about bunions. One of the two anyway...

...All the best for Christmas, have a truly forgetable Hogmanay, and I'll see you in 2008 for another year of rip-roaring Glasgow Guff.
