For Susan Meldrum
by: May

Hi Susan,

I wrote the original article about Crookston Castle, but I was very interested in you mentioning Johnny and Anne McFie. I lived next door to them in Leithland Rd, before they moved to Binend Road. I am older than them but was very friendly with their big sister Sandra. I came in age between Sandra and Alex.

But remembering them brought back lots of memories, tho' I doubt if Johnny and Anne would remember me.

Best wishes

May Cropley (nee Townsends)

I was born at 147 Levernside Rd in Pollok in 1957.Went to Drumcross then leithand and then Crookston Castle.I am now married to David Meldrum who also went to Crookston Castle. We met up again 8 years ago at a school reunion!! My maiden name was Kirk.We are still in touch with lots of people from "Crookie" Johnny McFie who was in David's year and Anne who was in mine. Also keep in touch with Ian Archbold, Bobby Robertson ,Catherine M'Elroy, Helen Alexander and Carole Brown. Lorraine Traynor was my best friend at school and she stayed in Brockburn Rd across from Crookston castle.I still keep in touch with her and also Isabelle McCallum. Would love to get in touch with Marlene Hooper who lived at 36 Netherplace road. I had a brother John who also went to Crookie. He was born in 1948 but sadly passed away in 1984 from cancer.Live in Netherlee now but still have such fond memories of Pollok especially Drumcross school.

by: Catriona (aka Tiny)

I love reading all the comments about the great times at crookie..I was in the Darnley house cause at school I went under my stepdads name of Gribben. But I should have really been in Maxwell as my last name is McIntyre. If anyone reconizes any of these names direct them to this site so we can all find each other... Morag Murdock, Donna Marr, Julia MacIntyre, Angela(she was the one giving everyone wacky haircuts lol), Podge(George Burton?), Sonia Ismail, smurf. We all would have went there 1980-1983ish....

by: Geordie

I went to Crookston many moons ago,I was friendly with Rab McVicar who was Maureens younger brother.

We had some funny escapades at school and some scary moments too.

I realised soon after leaving crookie that your school days are probably some of the best days of your life.

Have been living for 25 years now south of the border but always make time to go home and visit Glasgow / Scotland and see some old mates.

wedding at the castle
by: conrad

hi,this is conrad & laura, we got married at the castle this yaer [30th july 2011]and made history doing so,as it was the first in its history and its so great to read so many of the storys of what people done at the castle,i lived at 200 dorminside rd,top left, and like most of you all had so many great times to tell, but i dont have engough space to write it all,i had so many good times at all the places around, bull woods, water tower, rosshall caves, rosshall park, the cart and the castle, this is why we picked it for our wedding, what a great day, forty motorbikes about 200/250 people, and some local random's,haha, we had the ceremony in the bottom of the castle, all done up with drapes, our coat of arms, chairs, carpet, candles, music, flowers and the alter that we both made and a horse to roam the grounds after for photos,[see pictures at c&g digital arts website, under client albums Conrad & Laura's wedding)it was another memory to add to the many that i had as a boy being brought up in Pollock, this is why I'm sharing it all with you. hope you enjoy!!.

Pollok neighbours in those days, knew all the children AND their parents, and I remember all the winters 'up the hill" Crookston Castle, when my dad used to make our sledges with all the neighbourhood children!!!! happy days! so lovely to hear from you.....be great to keep in touch.....

Hi Lesley Shanks!
by: Anonymous

Hi Lesley, remember me Janet Hall? Myself and Jo Thom saw you off at Glasgow Central the day you went to New Zealand. Over the years I often thought about you and how you were getting on in NZ. By the way the Thoms moved to East Kilbride a couple of years after you left.

I found this site by accident and reading through some of the comments it is clear that many people had a happy upbringing in Pollok. I include myself in that. When we moved from Govan to Pollok in 1972 it was a wee paradise(nae burnt oot cars...unless you went to the Bundy). Myself and my family had some very happy times there and even though my parents are not with us anymore my best memories with them are in Pollok.

Who remembers when the siren would go off at Leverndale hospital....when someone got out that shouldn't have??

Happy days!

When I first wrote this wee bit about Crookston Castle, I certainly never expected such interest. But they were good days, and it's clear I'm not the only one with happy memories.

Gordon, we moved to Linthaugh Rd in 1952 when I was 3. My brother (also called Gordon) was 7. Our next door neighbours were the McFie family (kids were - Irene, Sandra, Alex, Fiona and Johnny).

Anyway, I feel I have much to be thankful for. We didn't have much money, but no-one did, yet it was a very happy childhood.

If I remember rightly I left for Lourdes at the start of the year (I remember this because I was 13th in the class at the summer)my Father said if I got into the top 3 at Xmas I would get a bike... I came 1st... the bike was a Raliegh Blue Streak Racer.. I also have a class photo taken in the playground.

Our family moved from Govan to Pollok and remember attending the first day of the opening of Crookston Castle Secondary School. I enjoyed the school very much and have fond memories of my time there.During a visit to Scotland. I now live in New Zealand, just prior to the school being demolished I visited the school and the head master then gave me the run of the school and when I was about to leave he presented m with she school tie, badge and gave me my old school report for my final year. My teachers back in 55,56 were great.
My family lived at 35 Lyoncross road and we had great neighbours and friends whom we we used to play in the Blue bell woods, the Castle of course and along the River Cart.

Nice to see other people have fond memories

Its interesting to see how many people from pollok are now spread over the world, and the memories they have of crookston castle. Ray remembers the doctors and the cleansing building. I remember that the doctors name was Dr Murray (Put 8 stitches across my eyebrow after I fell playing football in the street (remember how you always took a players name? I was d' stifano) I remember when they built the cleansing dept. One of the guys who worked there was Hugh Holden. I also remember the Bundy housing at the end of Brockburn Rd. What a place that was for gangs..
Its now called Silverburn Shopping Centre (although the only thing silver I remember about it was the old bike wheels lying in it) Really enjoy others memories, long may we be here to have them.

Great reading the wee clips from all in Pollok, We moved from Glasgow to Pollok in '54 and stayed at 61 Brockburn Rd (later moved to 255 Leithland rd.)
I remember playing Soldiers with my pals in and out of the castle and rolling into the ditch after being shot!! I can also remember collecting Ladybirds into a matchbox from the wild flowers roundabout the castle (didnt keep them, always let them go afterwards.. Honest!) we used to go down to the green bridge behind the red flats, I think the were called the spinster flats. The dare was to see who could hang under the bridge and swing across bar to bar over the burn. I went to St Monicas and then to Lourdes. Great times, no worries just enjoyment.. wish I was back.

I was just browsing through the comments about Crookston High and came across your name, don't know if you remember me, we used to all play together when we went to McGill Primary, we were in Miss McPhuns class, you, me and Alec Kelly, I lived in Dormanside Rd, then moved to Hapland Rd and like you now live in South Australia, go back to Glasgow every couple of years, love the city as it has great character, hope you see this...Regards Tom

Great to hear from you Kay
by: Catherine pender

Hi Kay,

Great to hear from you, I remember your family well. Alister, Archie, Alex, Betty and yourself.
I tended to play with Betty as you were a bit younger than us. I have lived in Jersey since 1973 and Violet and the rest of my family are still in Glasgow. I hope you have a lovely time when you revisit the old homestead, it certainly brought a lump to my throat when Violet & I went recently.

Many thanks also to May for this wonderful site and I hope that one day your friend sees it and gets in touch.

Best Regards

Catherine Pender.

Memories memories memories
by: Jim Ccampbell

I currently live in Western Canada but many years ago I lived in Pollok. 12 Colinslie Rd to be precise. In fact I was born there. I attended Langton Rd School then Drumcross and then onto Crookston Castle Secondary. Every body seems to remember the Rev. Currie well I do to. The Bluebell Woods might be a different one from the one I remember. Mine was at the foot of Colinslie Rd . I think theres a school there now.. things have really changed.I was also in The Boys Brigade at St Christophers Church in Pollok, just around the corner from where I lived.I came to Canada in 1969 and was a police officer in Vancouver for 30 years.I'm retired now but still think fondly and emotionally of days gone by.

I'm so pleased!
by: May

When I first submitted my photo of crookston castle (and my memories) to Scott's wonderful site - I never thought it would be read by so many, or get so many comments.

I guess those of us who were brought up there in the 50's and 60's really did have a wondeful childhood.

I live in hope that one of my dear school friend, Joyce Armstrong would find this site and make contact. She and our other friend Sadie and I were 'glued at the hip' when we were young. Sadie lives in Canada and we have kept in touch over the years - but I would love to get in touch with Joyce again. She married someone called Brian (can't remember his surname) - but if anyone knows her - I would love to hear from her.

Thanks, May

Crookston Castle
by: Kay Ross

Hi to Violet and Catherine Pender

It was good to see your comments about Pollok as I am one of the Ross family that grew up there between 1958 to 1970 at 19 Towerside Crescent right facing the castle and I went back there about 5 years ago and the castle still looks the same and they were good childhood days. I am now in Kent but Iam going back to look at my home town on August bank holiday. They were the good old days. I also remember Mr Currie and my God mother who is Kay Ramsay use to work at St James Church that is why I am called after her and I saw her two years ago in Edinburgh and will visit her in a few weeks time too. I think we were very lucky to have spent our childhood there.

all the best
Kay Ross

Our trip down memory lane today
by: Violet &catherine Pender

We really enjoyed reading the comments and had our own trip down memory lane just today. We lived at 4 Moyne Rd from 1949 to 1958 then moved around the corner to 12 towerside Rd until approx 1970 when we moved to 185 Brockburn Rd. Memories of old friends came flooding back today as we walked around the area. Namely Marion & Jeam McEachan,Carol & Stanley Burnett, Irene McLellan, Sandra & Barbara Cummings, Catherine Fachenie, The Ross and Mckiernan families,Ruthanne Baird, and Laraine & Ian Watt. Happy day's. we remember sliding down the hill as well one on a sledge and one on a tray. We also found the Castle great fun but a bit scary at times and we doubt very much if we would get through that wee shortcut to the top nowadays. Our very best wishes to all the Pollok Weans.

by: john Keith

Hi, Enjoyed reading the attached fond memories of Crookston castle. In the 50's I lived at 191 Lyoncross Road, and although quite young I remember the transportation of St. James's Church from the south side to it's present position, I think round about 1953. The Reverend Currie was a great character and I remember he used to make sure the Boys Brigade on a Sunday about 1pm marched along Lyoncross Road and stopped outside our house where they played a few tunes and then the parade was disbanded. Great stuff. Our neighbours the Stewarts used to run a 'bus to Blackpool every Septemember weekend and all the locals used to visit them every week with their contributions to pay for the trip. The Barnbeth Woods was where we played, full of hedgehogs in those days. And the park opposite was where we learnt to play football, even though we were always getting chased by the local constabulary.

Fond memories
by: Alan

My parents moved from an old tenement flat in Bridgeton to a brand new semi detached house in Kempsthorn Road Pollok when I was only a toddler.
After attending Leithland Road Primary School I attended Crookston Casle secondry school right next to the castle.
I have so many memories as a young child playing in the castle with my friends and in particular
what we thought was the dungeon which was very scary.
Today I live within a 15 minute drive of the castle and whilst the school and the tenements opposite have gone, the castle remains the same and brings back wonderful memories every time I pass.
It would be nice to think think that the local children are having the same fun as we had.

Hi

I also remember Crookston Castle as I used to live in 259 Braidcraft Road just over the Cart from Brockburn Road I went to Langton Road P School then Drumcross Road P School and then up to Crookston Castle Sec School The iron stairs up to the top were scary but the view from the top was incredible They say Mary Queen of Scots watched the Battle of Langside from the castle I have just returned from South Africa after 31years and took a trip around Pollok a year ago and thought it was looking nice I just love to visit all the places where I grew up and check it out The blubell woods were a favourite for me but that was because I had friends that lived in Dormanside Road and Linthaugh Road It was so nice in these days that you could roam around and not have any fear of being mugged or robbed Drugs were unheard of and we were so grown up in these days and went to work at 15 unless you stayed on for your highers

Crookston Castle and tenements
by: Leonard Goldsmith

My name is Leonard Goldsmith. I lived at 251 Linthaugh Road. We were one of the first families to live in the tenements. I was about 4. I went
to Lioncross Little School then Magill and then Crookston Castle. I remember playing in the castle sliding down the hill with our sledges in winter. We were always there at weekends. I remember on a sad note when a boy fell from the
top playing tig. I live in South Austalia now, I have been back a couple of times. I hope to be back in August this year.

Glad the Picture has brought back memories.
by: May

I really am pleased that my wee photo of Crookston Castle has brought back fond memories for some folk. Living in Pollok as a child was always fun and full of adventure. I guess life was simpler in those days. I really loved going to Crookston Castle School (even the Homework Classes). Hoping that one of my school friends might remember me and make contact (you can do that through the Contact Form on my website)

PS Scott, I just LOVE your site about Glasgow, and I'm sure others get a lot of pleasure out of it too.

i remember hanging around the castle as a kid. there was one time me and my mother went up to the castle. i was only in primary school. i ran up to the castle ahead of my mother and there was a bearded man standing at the castle door in an old beefeaters uniform. I turned around to tell my mother who was just coming round the corner but when i turned around again the man was gone!!! has anyone else seen or heard about this man? I know what i saw because it was about 4 weeks after i saw the man that i learned about beefeaters in school. i can still remember the incident to this day.

Memories
by: M.B.

Used to live in Pollok myself and knew the castle well. This brought back memories.
I remember playing in the grounds among the bluebells and rolling eggs down the hill in the rain with my mum! Didn't dare go there at night though..too many stories of the ghost of Mary Queen of Scots!
I remember climbing to the top of the castle up the old metal steps, (I was terrified!), and I remember squeezing through the shortcut to the second floor. The view from the top was and is magnificent.
Thank you for bringing this to mind!

What a surprise when I saw this picture.......I used to live just round the corner from Crookston Castle and it brings back some great memories of playing hide and seek in the castle grounds. I only wish I could go back there someday as I live in New Zealand now and it is plenty expensive to travel. This has cheered me up though so thanks for posting it!!!!

I pass it going to work
by: Scott

Thanks for the superb photo and story May, and I'm glad you were able to return for a wee trip down memory lane. I pass the castle sometimes depending on which way I head to work, and think that it's a piece of Glaswegian history that doesn't get as much attention as it deserves. So thanks again for reminding us of its significance, and all the best with your own site.
